Malbec & Argentina
Despite the fact that Malbec's origin is French (Cahors & Bordeaux), it is in Argentina that this grape found its home, where it thrived and where is more associated to. This country is, by far, the major producer and where you can find a wider spectrum of styles.
Some history facts: Malbec was introduced in the country by the French ampelographer, Michel Aime Pouget, in mid IX century, with a bunch of other grapes and first planted in Mendoza. Even though it was one of the most widely planted varieties throughout the XX century, it wasn't until recent (last 30 years) that Argentina started paying more attention into its high quality malbec winemaking and growing it in very different terroirs, especially at high altitude, throughout the country so as to show the potential and elasticity of this soft and round tannins grape.Today, winegrowers are making the most of their history with this grape (owning a good number of old pre-phylloxera vineyards) and their present (better knowledge of the terroirs).
MALBEC WINES
Argentinian Malbec shows a quite varied profile (ranging from juicy with red fruit and spice aromas -and sweet tannin flavours- to a less fruity, slightly herbaceous spectrum (with an earthy, black fruit profile). This is largely due to the diversity of genetic material and age of the vines (from recently planted vineyards to those over a hundred years old), winemaking decisions, and the growing conditions (great diversity of terroirs, given by altitude, climate and soil types).
